Santoshi Mata is a Mother of Satisfaction and many women in North India and even in Nepal worship her to seek her blessings. Women observe fast for sixteen Fridays consistently or until their wishes are fulfilled. Women offer flowers, incense jaggery and chickpeas to the Santoshi Maa to show their devotion towards her. On the day of fasting, women can eat only one meal the entire day. They do not eat or serve sour or bitter food. It is believed that all wishes are fulfilled by the goddess. It is said that performing the aarti after worshipping Maa Santoshi brings auspicious results. The sixteen fasts are concluded by organizing an audyapan ceremony, where women have to serve a festive meal to eight boys. Read this Aarti of Mother Santoshi that begins with words- Jai Santoshi Mata, Maiya Jai Santoshi Mata.
Santoshi Mata Ji is a form of Goddess Durga, who is calm, kind and pure. She is believed to be the daughter of Lord Ganesha. Kshema and Labha wanted a sister, which is why the goddess was born. The only way to make her happy and win her favour is to perform Santoshi Maa vrat.
In Sanskrit
श्री संतोषी देव्व्ये नमः
In English
Shri Santoshye Devyye Namah
The starting time of the 1960s saw the rise of goddess Santoshi Mata. During that time, her prayers were spread via word of mouth and poster art. Santoshi Maa Ji Ki Sawari is known as a tiger, cow or lotus. North Indian women follow this deity closely and observe fasting (vrat) in their worship.
Santoshi Maa sits on a fully bloomed lotus on the surface of the sea filled with milk. This symbol shows that the mother of satisfaction blesses those who have a pure heart and are totally dedicated. She lives in the hearts of her devotees.
Lord Ganesha used his special powers to produce a girl child because his sons Kshema and Labha wanted a sister. When both boys once witnessed their aunt Jyoti tying a thread to the right wrist of her father followed by showering with lots of gifts, they became curious about the tradition. Lord Ganesha then explained to them about the brother-sister bond and the importance of that sacred thread. That was the time when both brothers wished to have a sister too. The bright light emitted by Lord Ganesha blended with the radiance of his wives- Riddhi and Siddhi, to form a young girl. She tied the sacred thread on the hands of her brothers and got jaggery and chickpeas in return. She was happy with what she received and which is why she was named Santoshi.
