Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurpurab, also known as Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav and Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti is one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism. It marks the birth of the first Sikh Guru, i.e. Guru Nanak. It is celebrated every year on purnima, to honour the Guru.
Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was claimed to be born on the Full Moon. It is believed that the Sikhs have celebrated his birthday for this reason and since then it’s been in the Sikh Traditions.
Two days before this celebration, a procession is held, followed by hymns, and a few others.
Guru Nanak was born in 1469 and was succeeded by nine other gurus. However, in the year 1708, the Guruship was passed on by the tenth guru to the Sikh scripture, i. e Guru Grant Sahib, considered a living guru by the followers of Sikhism.
1. Guru Nanak
Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and first of the tenth Guru was born on 15 April, 1469. It is said that he’s a traveller to spread the message of One God (Ik Onkar). He would preach and set up many spiritual, social and political podiums for the teachings of goodness, love, equality and virtue.
2. Guru Angad
Guru Angad, the second of the ten Gurus, was born in 1504. He used to be a Hindu worshipper of Goddess Durga. But at the age of 27, he heard the hymns of Guru Nanak, decided to travel and meet the guru and went on to become a Sikh.
3. Guru Amar Das
Guru Amar Das, also known as Guru Amardas, third of the tenth Gurus was born on 5 May, 1479. Before he became a Sikh, he was prompted to search for a guru, and after he heard the hymns of Guru Nanak and at the age of 60 became a Sikh.
4. Guru Ram Das
Guru Ram Das was born in 1534 in the city of Lahore. He was the fourth of the tenth Gurus and turned an orphan at the age of 7 years old. And, when he turned 12, he met the third of the Guru and since then served Guru Amar Das and Sikh with all his devotion and humility.
5. Guru Arjan
Guru Arjan was one of the greatest of the Sikhs Gurus born on 15 April 1563. He was the fifth of the tenth guru and the first martyr. He took over the leadership from his father and expanded it. All the social reforms and missionary efforts were extended under his guidance.
6. Guru Hargobind
Guru Hargobind was born on 19 June 1595, the sixth of the ten Gurus. At the age of eleven, he started his journey to become a guru after the execution of his father, Guru Arjan by a Mughal emperor. After this, he introduced militarization to protect Sikhs symbolizing it by wearing two swords, representing the concept of power and spiritual authority.
7. Guru Har Rai
Guru Har Rai, born on 16th January 1630 was the seventh of the ten Gurus. He started his journey at the age of 14 after the death of his grandfather, Guru Hargobind, the sixth of the Gurus. He is known for his word of maintaining a large army of Sikh soldiers and yet avoided any military conflicts.
8. Guru Har Krishan
Guru Har Krishan was the youngest Guru in Sikhism. He was the eight of the ten Gurus born on 17th July 1656. He became a guru at the age of 5 by succeeding his father and died at an early age before reaching his eight birthday due to smallpox.
9. Guru Tegh Bahadur
Guru Tegh Bahadur was known as the protector of humanity and the ninth of the ten Gurus. He was born on 24th November 1675 and followed the footsteps of his grandnephew, Guri Har Krishna Ji. He was a warrior, thinker, poet and carried forward the light of divinity and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
10. Guru Gobind Singh
Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth of the Guru, born on 22nd December, 1666. He was formally made to be a leader after his father was beheaded for refusing to convert to Islam. He was a great warrior, spiritual master, poet and founder of the community called the Khalsa.
The ten Gurus in Sikhism are considered to be the diving messengers and enlighteners. Sikhism was established by these ten Gurus over 239 years. They were spiritual teachers who enlighten the souls of the masses by practising the righteous principles of how to live life.
