Darun – a demon (rakshas/asura) a boon that he could die only at the hands of a woman. To end him, the gods went to Lord Shiva with Brahma Ji and prayed for him to do something. After listening to everyone’s prayers, Shiva looked at Mata Parvati smiling. Understanding his gesture, Mother Parvati extracted a fraction of her power that entered Lord Shiva’s body through Neelkanth. After this, Lord Shiva opened his third eye, from which that power came out of his eye.
That power took the form of a huge and imposing woman. His colour was dark black and red like tongue. There was a sharp fire on the face and there was a third eye on the forehead. In this way, the birth of Maa Kaali / Kali Mata happened to eliminate the demons.
