To kill the demon Mahishasura, Trimurti combined their powers and hence created a warrior woman, who was then named Maa Durga. Over the times, she was popular with the name Sherawali Maa. She mounts/rides a lion that was gifted by Himavan, the lord of the Himalayas. Durga Ji Ki Sawari is Lion.
Maa Durga is a symbol of “self-within” and she is considered as the divine mother of all the creations. She holds various weapons to fight the evil forces. Each weapon has a different symbolism, such as self-discipline, prayer, self-examination, and others.
Indus Valley civilization has the mention of Kalibangan that had a cylindrical seal which holds the evidence of a goddess-like Durga. Among her earliest references, chapter 10.125 of the Rig Veda mentions her. The Veda is also known as Devi Suktam hymn (abridged) and is well known Hindu scripture.
The Goddess Durga took birth to kill the evil demon Mahishasura. She was created with the combined powers of the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. She is the most powerful female deity that has ten arms.
There are a number of incarnations of Maa Durga such as Kali, Bhagwati, Meenakshi and Kamakshi, and even Sherawali Maa. She is worshipped to get rid of evil powers and attain peace of mind and soul.
