Independence Day History
On the evening of August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister after independence, proclaimed that India shall awake to life and freedom in the middle of the night while the world sleeps. His words accurately captured the struggle and happiness of newly independent India, free from British rule. He also raised the Indian flag at the Red Fort in Delhi to celebrate the historic occasion. This became a symbolic act, and it still happens on the morning of 15th August, when the country celebrates its Independence Day. People across the country celebrate the day by participating in the flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events, and as little as watching the prime minister hoisting the flag and addressing the nation on television.
Independence Day Significance of this day
Independence Day is notable because it honors the courage and passion of the people who fought to free their country from British rule. Each year, a Prime Minister unfurls the flag at the Red Fort followed by playing India’s national anthem to mark the day as one of national pride and honor. The PM addresses the nation with his speech evaluating the past year’s performance and providing insights on future plans. He also pays his tribute to the martyrs for contributing to the freedom struggle. As it is a national holiday, the day is celebrated with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs, flying kites, and playing patriotic songs on loudspeakers throughout the country.
