On the evening of August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister after independence, proclaimed that India shall awake to life and freedom in the middle of the night while the world sleeps. His words accurately captured the struggle and happiness of newly independent India, free from British rule. He also raised the Indian flag at the Red Fort in Delhi to celebrate the historic occasion. This became a symbolic act, and it still happens on the morning of 15th August, when the country celebrates its Independence Day.
