Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrations

The celebrations of Guru Nanak Jayanti are nothing short of splendor and appreciation. In Gurudwaras, it starts two days prior to the main day. Hence, in 2021, the preparations for Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrations will start on 17th November 2021. Herein, Akhand Path is done, which is a 48-hour non-stop recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. Also, one day prior to Guru Nank Jayanti, Nagar Kirtan is organised.

During the parade, the holy Guru Grant Sahib is placed in a palanquin. People sing hymns in groups and play customary instruments. In addition, they display their martial art skills. The cheerful parade goes through roads enriched with flags and blossoms.

History of Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev, who was born on April 15, 1469. His birthplace was near Lahore, which is nowadays based in the Sheikhupura district of modern-day Pakistan. At his birthplace, a Gurdwara was built and named Nankana Sahib. Shri Guru Nanak founded Sikhism in the 15th century and completed 974 hymns in the Guru Granth Sahib.
