What is Pongal Meaning?
Pongal is celebrated in association with harvesting on the first day of Thai, which means when the Sun enters Makara Rasi. Due to this, it is also called Makara Sankranthi as it brings the onset of spring.

Pongal is a four-day festival where people celebrate by decorating homes, buying new vessels and burning away old ridden things.

The beautiful word “Pongal” is based on Tamil literature, which actually means “to boil”. In fact, Pongal is also a rice dish that is prepared especially for this festival. This festival has mentioned in the Sanskrit Puranas and is dated back to the Sangam Age.

There are many theories to Pongal’s history, some date it back to the Sangam Age while others date it back to the 2,000 years old festival. According to tales, it has many rituals for agricultural prosperity. For instance, people refrain from using harsh words, the ceremonial bath is necessary, abstain from milk consumption etc.

It is present in the Sanskrit Puranas and was believed to be celebrated as Thai Niradal in the Sangam age. Another belief is that during the festival of Pongal, unmarried girls observed penance and prayed for an agricultural prosperity. In addition, they would also carry out fasting on the day.

Instead, the bull unintentionally said that people should have an oil bath once per day along with eating everybody. Lord Shiva got angry and banished him to earth forever, where he would help people make more food.
