When is Hindi Diwas or Hindi Day Celebrated?
Every year, 14th September is celebrated as Hindi Diwas or Hindi Day. The 1st Hindi Diwas was celebrated in the year 1953. After independence, on 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly had decided to make Hindi the official language of the country. At that time most of the work of the government was done in English. But, in view of the multi-coloured culture of the country, the need was felt for a language that would connect most of the country with each other. After much deliberation, Hindi was chosen as the official language for this.
History of Hindi Diwas
The celebration of Hindi Diwas is done towards marking the acceptance of Hindi language in Devanagari script. On 14 September 1949, Hindi was chosen as the official language in a large number of Indian states.
The Constituent Assembly of India chose two languages of the Republic of India and gave them the official language status – one of these languages was Hindi. To make it possible, the maximum efforts were given by Beohar Rajendra Simha, who was supported by:
14 September 1949 was the 50th birthday of Beohar Rajendra Simha and on this day itself Hindi was made the official language of India. This was sanctioned or made legal on 26th of January 1950.
Hindi Diwas Programs
Hindi Diwas is mainly celebrated in the Northern states of India and on this day a number of programs take place. Apart from the programs, the students are taught the importance of Hindi language and its use in daily practices. Essay writing, debate and Poem writing are three common programs that are done on Hindi Diwas. Many prestigious organisations that follow the Mantra of make in India organise a number of programs or events in their offices and reward the best one with cash coupons. To emphasize on the Hindi language, the national language week is also organised.
