Maha Shivratri is one of the sacred annual Hindu festivals of immense power and devotion of Lord Shiva. Every year, this festival is celebrated on the Chaturdashi of the Krishna in the Falgun month. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married on this day. Both the lords are worshiped with all the rituals and are offered hemp, dhatura, bel Patra, and plum to make them happy. In 2021, Maha Shivratri falls on Thursday, March 11.

The Maha Shivaratri has mentions in Skanda Purana, Linga Purana and Padma Purana, among the other Purana. One of the versions of this festival is that on the night of Maha Shivratri, Shiva performs the heavenly dance which is associated with three factors of creation, preservation, and destruction. There is another legend, which says that Shiva and Parvati got married this night.
Maha Shivratri Significance
Many people chant religious rituals and Rudrabhishek and Maha Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on this day. It is believed that chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra has special significance on this day and all our wishes are fulfilled. On this day, people observe Shiva in most of the houses, and in the evening complete the fast by making a palahaar. On this day, Shiva processions are taken out in many places across the country and this festival is celebrated with pomp.
Why Lord Shiva Is Worshiped On This Day
Lord Shiva has more than one event associated with this special day, because of which he is worshiped on this day. According to ancient Hindu literature, on the day of Shiv Maha Shivratri, Lord Shiva got married; he performed the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. It is also believed that on this day, the lord gulped the Halahala that came during the Samudra Manthan.
The Emergence of Shivalinga
The oldest presence of Shivalinga is the Gudimallam Lingam. It is present in the Parashurameshwara temple, Gudimallam, which is based in Andhra Pradesh. It’s been dated between the 1st century to the 3rd century. This Shivalinga has a definite portrayal of an erect phallus. Its front side has a carved Shiva figure, which is holding an axe and antelope in its hands.
When Earth Worshiped Lord Shiva
Among various stories related to Maha Shivratri, one states that once Goddess Parvati requested Lord Shiva to prevent the destruction of the Earth. The great lord agreed on the condition that all its inhabitants should start worshiping him with complete passion and dedication. This event is also termed as ‘when earth worshiped Lord Shiva.

Natraj/Nateshwar are the other names of Lord Shiva. According to legends, there are various forms of Lord Shiva’s Dance Rudra Tandavbut, Lasya, Yogic, and Ananda Tandav. The Tandavam dance shows the Tamasic aspect of the lord. On the day, when the greatest lord performed the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction; the day was celebrated as Maha Shivratri.
