What is the story of Dussehra?
During the course of Vanvas [residence (vās) in a forest (van)], Sita who is the wife of Lord Rama was kidnapped by Ravana and taken to Lanka. In order to get her back, there was a war between Lord Rama and Ravana. On the first nine days of the war, Lord Rama worshiped Goddess Durga, who is also known as the Goddess of War. On the tenth day, Lord Rama killed the evil Ravana and hence the festival of Dussehra came into being. Because of this story, this day is also known as Vijaya Dashami, which symbolizes the victory of Lord Rama.
Dussehra Significance
In the year 2021, Dussehra will be celebrated on 15 October 2021. In older times, kings used to conduct prayers for their victory and then go for these Rann Yatra. The festival of Dussehra is an inspirational one, which motivates everyone to give up 10 sins – lust, anger, greed, attachment, matsar, ego, laziness, violence, and theft. In addition to this, there is a great interrelation with Navratri, since Dussehra comes only after the end of Navratri (on its 10th day). In addition to this, Dussehra also cites the courageousness of the goddess against Mahishasura. On this day Rama killed Ravana.
