Why is Chhath Puja Celebrated?
In Hindu Mythology, there are a couple of stories related to the celebration of Chhath Puja. The festival is celebrated by offering Arghya to the setting sun on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. We all know it as Mahaparv Chhath. By the way, Chhath starts with the tradition of Nahay Khay from Chaturthi and then with Kharna, Usha Arghya and Sandhya Arghya. This festival is now celebrated with pomp across the country. Lord Surya is worshiped with full devotion and devotion on this fast and this festival of Chhathi Maiya is celebrated with full devotion. It is believed that by observing this fast, your child will be happy and he gets longevity. At the same time, the sixth maiya fills the empty bag of childless people too.
- Chhathi Maiya is the Manasputri of Lord Brahma and the sister of Lord Surya. She is known as the 6th part of nature and hence is also called Shashthi.
- Lord Rama and his wife, Mata Sita also observed fasting on the eve of Chhath Puja.
- It is also believed since ancient times that during the Mahabharata period, Surya’s son Karna also worshiped Chhath. He used to stand in water for hours every day and offer Arghya to the sun. He became a great warrior only by the grace of Surya. Even today, this tradition of offering Arghya is prevalent in Chhath.
- When the Pandavas lost all their royalty in gambling, Draupadi kept the Chhath fast. Their wishes were fulfilled, and the Pandavas got the royal palace back.
Auspicious time for Chhath Puja 2021
The festival of Chhath Puja starts from the Shashthi of Kartik month and is celebrated over 4 days. In the year 2021, Chhath Puja will begin on 8th November, 2021. Arghya will also be offered to Sun on 9th,10th and 11th November 2021. Kharna is the 2nd day of Chhath Puja (9th November 2021), when women observe a Nirjala fast for the whole day. On the 3rd day, Chhathi Maiya is worshipped in the evening in a river, and then Arghya to Lord Surya at sunset.
