Bhratri Dwitiya or Bhai Dooj is a Hindu festival, which signifies the strength of the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. In the year 2021, Bhaiya Dooj will fall on Saturday, 6th November.

This occasion is always observed two days after Deepavali Puja or Diwali. Among the various Hindu festivals, Bhaiya Dooj is significant. In the year 2023, The Puja Muhurat occurs on November 14, 2023, from 2:37 PM to 3:19 PM. The theme and feel of this festival are similar to that of Rakshabandhan. It is believed that on the day of Bhai Dooj, the age of brothers increases by eating food at sisters’ houses. Not only this but the importance of taking a dip in the Yamuna on this day has also been told.

Bhai Dooj Significance 2023

The honest and beautiful relationship between brother and sister is celebrated on Bhaiya Dooj. This occasion falls on the 2nd day of Diwali. The brothers visit their sister’s home (if she is married), else the puja and celebration take place at their parental house. The brother also takes a pledge to protect the sister and gives her gifts. Bhai Dooj is also known as Bhai Dooj, Bhai Tika, Yama Dwitiya, Bhatri Dwitiya etc. Yamraj, the god of death, is worshiped on the day of Bhai Dooj. According to the legend, it is believed that on this day Yama Dev went to have food at home at the behest of his sister the Yamuna.

 

Bhaiya Dooj Rituals

On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters do Tilak to the brother and decorate the puja plate with vermilion, kumkum, sandalwood, fruits, flowers, sweets, betel nut, etc. Before doing tilak to the brother, make a square with the rice mixture. Make your brother sit on this square made of rice and do tilak during the auspicious duration. After doing tilak to bother, give flowers, betel leaf, betel nut, batashe, and black gram to the brother and perform his aarti. After the brother’s tilak and aarti, give a promise of protection and a gift to the brother and sister.
