Ingredients of Sweet Pongal:

  • ½ cup moong dal
  • ¾ cup of rice
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup of water
  • 1 cup grated jaggery
  • ½-3/4 tsp of cardamom powder
  • 2-3 tsp of ghee
  • 2 crushed cloves
  • 2tsp raisins
  • Turmeric

How to make Sweet Pongal

Step 1: Roast moong dal and rice

Roast moong dal and rice on a pan or a small Kadai. Heat on low flame. Stir both rice and dal until they become aromatic. Do not roast them till they are brown!

Step 2: Pour it bowl

Pour them into a bowl and rinse them well with water a couple of times.

Step 3: Add Rice, water and keep them whistles

Drain, add rice and dal, 3 cups of water into a pressure cooker. Keep them for 8-10 whistles.

Step 4: Cook for 15 Minutes.

Bring the pressure cooker on medium flame, cook it for 15 minutes.

Step 5: Add water and mix

When done, let the cooker settle down, remove the lid and check its consistency after! If not well made, add ½ cup of water and mix it well.

Step 6: Mash Rice and Moong Dal

Gently mash the rice and moong dal, if cooked, it should have a consistency of khichdi.

Step 7: Add cardamon, clove, salt, turmeric

Add, cardamon, clove, salt, turmeric to the cooked rice and lentils.

Step 8: Add jaggery

Now that the food is ready, the next step is to add jaggery. Get some grated jaggery of about 120 grams, and for more sweetness, add ¼ cup more of it.

Step 9: Add jaggery to water

Add jaggery to ½ cup of water in a pan.

Step 10: Heat in Low Flame

Bring this to low medium flame, heat the jaggery till it completely melts.

Step 11: Let's syrup cool and add it to mixture.

Let the syrup cool, strain it through a sieve and add it to the mixture.

Step 12: Add cardamom and clove powder

Add some flavoured cardamom and clove powder, mix them all well together.

Step 13: Fry dry fruits

Fry some dry fruits with ghee, stir them brown.

Step 14: Sweet Pongal is ready to serve

Add them to the mixture, mix well and you have your sweet Pongal ready!

Sweet Pongal Dish Making Tips
Adding turmeric is beneficial for your health, however, you can skip this process if you like it sweet flavoured. Any kind of dry nuts is good. Use fresh jaggery instead of the powdered one
