How to Tie a Full Windsor Knot Step by Step

Step 1: Cross the widen tie over the left

Cross the widen tie over the left of the small end

Step 2: Pull from underneath

Pull from underneath up to the neck.

Step 3: take it down to left around the back

Take it down to the left around the back.

Step 4: Then up to centre

Then up to the centre.

Step 5: Bring it through the neck

Types of Tie Knots

Four In Hand Knot

It is a method of tying a tie which is commonly known as a schoolboy knot or a simple knot.

 How to Tie a Four In Hand Knot

  1. Cross the wider tie over the thin
  2. Pass it from right
  3. Take it around the front knot
  4. Take it through the wrap from top
  5. Pull the knot down and it’s ready

Half Windsor Knot

It is known as the younger brother of Full Windsor, medium in size and symmetrical in shape. It is best to be used with neckties.

How to Tie a Half Windsor Knot 

  1. Cross over the wide end on the right the left
  2. Always place the wide end above belly button
  3. Rotate it around and bring it to right
  4. Take it up and centre towards the neck loop
  5. Take it to the left through the neck loop
  6. Bring across the front to the right
  7. Take it up underneath the neck loop
  8. Pull and tighten the knot

Nicky Knot

It is a method of versatile tie knot, and its size lies between half Windsor knot and four in hand knot.

How to Tie a Nicky Knot

  1. Cross thin tie over wide tie
  2. Bring the wider one into the loop
  3. Bring it to the side
  4. Take it to the left around
  5. Insert into the neck loop
  6. Pull downward and tighten the knot

Bow Tie Knot 

This method of tie knot was made with the need for a necktie, and it was more popular by the end of the 19th century.

How to Tie a Bow Tie Knot 

  1. Cross longer tie over the shorter one
  2. Take the longer one under the neck
  3. Fold the other toe in a bow shape by pulling it the left and folding it back
  4. Bring over the longer tie on top of the bow
  5. Fold the longer tie and pass the loop behind the other tie
  6. Pull the longer tie through the loop and this will make half of the bow
  7. Tighten the knots on opposite sides to form a bow tie

Kelvin Knot 

This knot is named after Lord Kelvin, the famous mathematician physicist who contributed to the theory of knot about science.

How to Tie a Kelvin Knot 

  1. Hang the wider tie two or three inches lower than the other
  2. Take the wider tie under the thinner tie with both seams facing outwards
  3. Bring it around the thinner tie and take it underneath the loop around the collar
  4. Pull it through the loop and tighten the tie by grasping the knot.

Pratt Knot

It is known as the Pratt and Shelby knot and was created by Jerry Patt in the late 1950s.

How to Tie a Pratt Knot 

  1. Place the tie around the neck
  2. Hang the wider tie longer than the thin one
  3. Take the wider tie under the thinner tie with both seams facing outwards
  4. Fold it around and bring it up through the neck loop
  5. Insert it into the loop and tighten the tie by grasping the knot

St Andrew Knot

This method of knot tying is slightly thicker and considered to be easy knot making for beginners.

How to Tie a St Andrew Knot

  1. Hang the wide end of the tie to the right side and vice versa around the neck
  2. Both seams should face outwards
  3. Bring the wide tie around the thin tie
  4. Take it over to the centre
  5. and bring from right to left
  6. Bring it over the
  7. neck loop again
  8. Pass it over the narrow end to the left
  9. Bring it upwards and pass it through the loop created
  10. Pull and tighten around the neck

Balthus Knot

It was invented by Balthus, a Polish-French modern artist in 1930 which is conical and broad in shape.

How to Tie a Balthus Knot

  1. Drape the tie with the seam upward around the neck with the think end to the left
  2. Cross it over the thin end, bring it up behind the knot and take it horizontally to the left
  3. Now bring it up behind the knot and take it horizontally to the right
  4. Tuck in the tie through the horizontal pass and adjust it accordingly

Hanover Knot

This tie knot is similar to the Grantchester knot which is made with its seam facing outside at a starting position.

How to Tie a Hanover Knot

  1. Hang the tie with a seam upward on the neck by placing the wide end of the tie to the right and the narrow end to the left
  2. Cross the narrow tie over the wide end tie
  3. Take the wide end tie across the narrow tie
  4. Bring it upwards and pull down the wide end to the left
  5. Bring it upwards again and pull down the wide end to the right
  6. Take it across the front knot
  7. Bring it up and pull it through the loop and tighten it around the neck

Plattsburgh Knot

Grantchester Knot
